WHO Condemns Israeli Attacks on Gaza Facilities, Demands Release of Detained Staff
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, were attacked by the Israeli military on Monday, October 2, 2023. The staff residence was attacked three times, causing a fire and extensive damage, endangering staff and their families. Two WHO staff members and two family members were detained; three were later released, but one staff member remained in detention. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus demanded the immediate release of the detained staff and protection for all its personnel. The WHO's main warehouse, located within an evacuation zone, was also damaged by an attack on Sunday, October 1, 2023. Despite these attacks, the WHO stated it would remain in Deir al-Balah and expand its operations.
The attacks occurred amid an ongoing conflict, with Israeli tanks entering southern and eastern districts of Deir al-Balah on Monday. Gaza's health ministry reported at least 130 Palestinian deaths and over 1,000 injuries from Israeli gunfire and military strikes in the previous 24 hours. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned the attacks on UN premises, emphasizing the inviolability of such locations and the obligation to protect civilian sites. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Jonathan Whittall, the UN's local head in Gaza, chose to remain in Deir al-Balah despite Israel's refusal to renew his visa. Reports from UNRWA highlighted widespread starvation concerns within Gaza. Additional incidents included the killing of a journalist and the detention of Gaza's field hospitals head. More than two dozen western countries called for an immediate end to hostilities, a statement condemned by Israeli officials.
Impact Statement: The attacks on WHO facilities and the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza severely hamper international aid efforts and endanger the lives of civilians and aid workers, demanding immediate international intervention.
