Peru Bus Crash Kills at Least 15
A bus traveling from Lima to La Merced crashed on Friday, resulting in at least 15 deaths and approximately 30 injuries. The double-decker bus, belonging to Expreso Molina Líder Internacional and carrying over 60 passengers, veered off the road and fell into a ravine in the Palca district of the Junin region, according to Health director Clifor Curipaco. The bus, split in two, landed on its roof near a river. Authorities, including health official Aldo Tineo from Tarma, are working to identify the deceased.
Bus crashes are frequent in Peru. A similar incident in January resulted in six deaths and 32 injuries. In 2024, there were roughly 3,173 traffic fatalities nationwide, with the Attorney General's Office citing recklessness, excessive speed, and poor road conditions as primary causes. The cause of Friday's accident is under investigation.
