Germany Sees Record High in Human Trafficking Cases in 2024
Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reported a record 576 investigations into human trafficking in 2024, a 13% increase from 2023 and the highest number since 2000. Sexual exploitation comprised the largest share of cases (364), the highest in a decade. Many victims are women, young people, and minors, often targeted online via the "lover-boy method," involving false relationships leading to financial exploitation and violence. Over 200 cases involved children and adolescents, primarily in commercial sexual exploitation, facilitated by weak online safeguards. The BKA also investigated a record number of labor exploitation cases, frequently involving temporary employment agencies and victims from Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
The BKA acknowledges the actual number of crimes is likely far higher due to underreporting, with victims often hesitant to come forward due to fear or legal unfamiliarity. The increase is partly attributed to insufficient protective mechanisms on various online platforms.
Impact Statement: The record number of human trafficking cases highlights the urgent need for stronger online safety measures and increased efforts to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly minors, from exploitation.
