ICE Train Passengers Stranded in Austrian Tunnel for Six Hours
Around 400 passengers aboard a German Deutsche Bahn ICE high-speed train traveling from Vienna to Hamburg were stuck in a tunnel near Vienna for over six hours on Saturday after a power failure. The train stopped approximately 15 minutes into the journey around 1:30 p.m. local time. The air conditioning and lights failed, leaving passengers in hot and dark conditions.
An evacuation operation involving roughly 100 rescue workers lasted more than six hours, partly due to passengers exiting the train and requiring the tunnel power to be shut off again for safety reasons. Passengers were eventually evacuated via emergency exits and transported back to Vienna by bus. Two passengers received on-scene medical treatment, but no hospitalizations were necessary.
The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) reported ongoing delays to long-distance trains from Vienna. Deutsche Bahn attributed the incident to a technical problem, but noted that ÖBB operated the affected section of track in Austria.
Impact Statement: The incident caused significant disruption to train services from Vienna and highlighted safety concerns related to power failures on high-speed rail lines.
