Vascular Surgeon Charged with Fraud and Encouraging Self-Harm
Neil Hopper, 49, a vascular surgeon from Truro, Cornwall, appeared before Cornwall Magistrates' Court in Bodmin on charges of fraud and encouraging grievous bodily harm. He is accused of two counts of fraud by false representation, allegedly claiming injuries to his legs were due to sepsis, not self-inflicted, between June 3 and 26, 2019. He also faces a charge of encouraging Marius Gustavson to remove the body parts of others between August 21, 2018, and December 4, 2020, allegedly by purchasing videos depicting limb removal from a website called "The Eunuch Maker." Mr. Hopper, formerly employed by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, was remanded into custody and will appear at Truro Crown Court on August 26. He has been suspended from the medical register since December 2023.
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust stated the charges do not relate to Mr. Hopper's professional conduct and there is no evidence suggesting risk to patients. They advised former patients with concerns to contact their patient experience team.
Impact Statement: The case raises serious concerns about the actions of a medical professional and may impact public trust in the healthcare system.
