Israeli Navy Intercepts Aid Boat Bound for Gaza
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) reported that the Israeli navy intercepted the Handala vessel, carrying food aid, including baby formula, to Gaza, in international waters. Video footage shows armed soldiers taking control of the ship, with activists on board having their hands raised. The Israeli foreign ministry stated the navy stopped the boat from illegally entering Gaza's maritime zone and breaching the blockade, adding that the ship and passengers are safe and en route to Israel. The FFC, however, claims 19 activists and two journalists from several countries were "kidnapped." The FFC posted videos of crew members urging international pressure on their governments to sanction Israel.
This incident follows a similar June interception of a yacht carrying activists, including Greta Thunberg, also organized by the FFC. Israel maintains its blockade of Gaza, implemented after Hamas seized control in 2007, citing security concerns. The blockade, tightened after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, has led to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel now prioritizes aid distribution through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a system opposed by the UN and other aid groups due to concerns about neutrality and independence. Recent actions include an Israeli military airdrop of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Impact Statement: The incident further exacerbates tensions between Israel and pro-Palestinian groups, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the contentious nature of aid delivery under the current blockade.
