Pebble Smartwatches Officially Return with Original Branding
Core Devices CEO Eric Migicovsky announced the successful recovery of the Pebble trademark, allowing the revived smartwatches to officially use the Pebble name. The new devices, previously called Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2, will now be known as Pebble 2 Duo and Pebble Time 2, respectively. This marks a significant return for the original smartwatch company, which was acquired by Fitbit in 2016 for $23 million and subsequently saw its software open-sourced by Google. The rebranding not only streamlines marketing but also acknowledges the dedicated Pebble community, including the Rebble group, who kept the devices functional after the initial company closure.
Migicovsky highlights the importance of the original branding, stating that the name "Pebble" helps to strengthen the comeback narrative and allows community members to use the name for related projects.
Impact Statement: The return of the Pebble brand and its associated trademark strengthens the relaunch of the smartwatches, leveraging brand recognition and community support.
