VPN App Downloads Surge in UK Following Age Verification Rules
Following the implementation of age verification rules on Friday for websites like PornHub, Reddit, and X, VPN apps have become the most downloaded apps on Apple's UK App Store. This is because VPNs mask online location, enabling users to bypass the Online Safety Act's age restrictions. By Monday morning, approximately half of the top ten free apps were VPN services, with one app developer reporting an 1800% increase in downloads. Concerns have been raised about the security risks associated with free VPNs, as some may harvest user data or be poorly secured, potentially exposing users to attacks.
Experts like Daniel Card of the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) highlight the inherent risks of free VPNs, noting that they often end up in the hands of children seeking age-restricted content or adults attempting to circumvent blocks. Children's safety group Internet Matters expressed concern about the accessibility of free VPNs to children, enabling them to bypass online safety protections. Ofcom clarified that platforms with age verification must not facilitate the use of VPNs to circumvent these checks, a stance echoed by the UK government. Proton VPN also reported a significant surge in UK users, suggesting concern over privacy implications of universal age verification. Many free VPN apps claim to protect user privacy and not share data with third parties, however security experts warn that users often download apps without fully understanding the implications to their data security.
Impact Statement: The surge in VPN app downloads highlights a potential unintended consequence of stricter online age verification, showcasing the lengths users will go to access restricted content and raising concerns about online security and privacy.
