Anthropic Launches National Security Advisory Council
Anthropic, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company, announced the formation of a National Security and Public Sector Advisory Council on Wednesday. The council aims to strengthen Anthropic's relationships with the US government and allied nations as AI's role in defense expands. The council's members include former US Senator Roy Blunt, former Deputy CIA Director David S. Cohen, and Richard Fontaine of the Center for a New American Security, among other former high-ranking officials from various US government departments.
The council will advise Anthropic on integrating AI into sensitive government operations, while also helping to establish standards for AI security, ethics, and compliance. Its focus will include high-impact applications in cybersecurity, intelligence analysis, and scientific research. Anthropic plans to expand the council as its public-sector partnerships grow. This initiative follows the Pentagon's recent launch of a $200 million program to develop AI tools for defense, reflecting increased global competition in AI development. Other companies involved in the Pentagon's program include OpenAI, Alphabet (Google's parent company), and xAI.
Impact Statement: Anthropic's initiative highlights the growing collaboration between AI companies and governments to address the security and ethical implications of rapidly advancing AI technology.
