Stephen Sondheim's Papers: A Legacy Preserved at the Library of Congress
The Library of Congress has acquired approximately 5,000 items from the estate of Stephen Sondheim (died 2021), including manuscripts, music and lyric drafts, recordings, notebooks, and scrapbooks. This collection, fulfilling a bequest made shortly after a 1993 visit to the Library, offers unparalleled insight into the creative process of the renowned composer and lyricist. The acquisition includes materials related to his most celebrated shows (Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods), lesser-known works, and even a commercial he wrote for The Simpsons.
Among the materials are hundreds of sketches for well-known works, along with drafts of songs that were cut or never produced. The collection also contains personal notebooks from his time at Williams College, showcasing early compositions. Senior music specialist Mark Horowitz, a longtime acquaintance of Sondheim, has curated the collection and shared details about its contents, including the surprisingly rapid creation of "Send in the Clowns" (written in 24 hours for Glynis Johns), and extensive lyric sketches for "A Little Priest" from Sweeney Todd.
The collection survived a 1995 fire in Sondheim's home office, with many items showing minor smoke damage. The Library of Congress aims to make this collection, which joins those of other musical theatre greats, accessible to researchers.
Impact Statement: The acquisition ensures the preservation of a significant archive documenting the life and work of Stephen Sondheim, a major figure in musical theatre, making it available for scholarly research and public appreciation.
