Intel Announces Massive Layoffs, Shrinking Workforce by One-Third
Intel has announced significant workforce reductions, revealing plans to lay off approximately 33,000 employees by the end of 2025. This represents a roughly one-third decrease from its 109,800 employee count at the end of 2024. The company stated it will abandon planned projects in Germany and Poland, including mega-fabs slated to employ 3,000 and 2,000 workers respectively, and will cease operations in Costa Rica, impacting over 3,400 employees. Intel spokesperson Sophie Metzger previously stated the company had not set a headcount reduction target.
The decision to scale back operations in Germany, Poland, and Costa Rica will significantly impact those regions' economies and employment sectors. Intel plans to consolidate its Costa Rican operations in Vietnam. The company aims to have approximately 75,000 employees by the end of 2025.
Impact Statement: Intel's restructuring will have a substantial impact on employment in several countries and the semiconductor industry.
