Google Integrates Generative AI into Shopping Experience
Google is enhancing its online shopping experience with new AI-powered features launching this fall in the US. These include an AI Mode that generates images of outfits and home decor based on user text descriptions, helping users find visually similar products. The AI-generated images are not real products but serve as visual aids to guide product recommendations. A virtual try-on tool, previously in Search Labs, is also fully launching in Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images, allowing users to upload a photo and see how clothing items would look on them.
Users can access the virtual try-on tool by selecting the "try it on" icon on clothing product results and uploading a full-length photo. Google's AI then displays how the selected apparel might appear on the user. The AI Mode aims to improve upon existing methods by offering a visual shopping experience directly linked to real-world purchasable items, unlike moodboard platforms. While the AI-generated images are initially not real products, they help visualize search results.
Impact Statement: This integration could significantly change online shopping by providing more visual and personalized experiences, potentially increasing user engagement and sales for online retailers.
