Gaza Medical Workers Face Starvation, Jeopardizing Healthcare
Doctors and medical staff in Gaza are reportedly too weak to provide adequate care due to severe hunger and lack of food. Almost a dozen medical workers have described desperate searches for food and deteriorating health, with some fainting during surgeries. Dr. Mohammed Abu Selmia, director of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, stated that staff haven't received aid or meals in 48 hours and that services will be further impacted by the famine. Many doctors fear reprisal for speaking out. Reports indicate 21 children have died in three days due to malnutrition and starvation. The UNRWA chief, Philippe Lazzarini, corroborated reports of healthcare workers fainting from hunger. The IDF stated it is working to facilitate aid distribution but acknowledged incidents causing harm to civilians at distribution sites. Gaza's healthcare system, already severely damaged, faces further collapse due to the crisis. Muath Alser of Healthcare Worker Watch called for urgent action.
Impact Statement: The starvation of medical personnel in Gaza is critically jeopardizing the already fragile healthcare system, leading to preventable deaths and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
