The United States will deport lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who allegedly supported the Haitian armed group Viv Ansanm, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday, YYYY-MM-DD. Viv Ansanm, which controls much of Port-au-Prince, was previously designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration in May. Rubio stated that the US "will not allow individuals to enjoy the benefits of legal status…while they are facilitating the actions of violent organizations or supporting criminal terrorist organizations." No specific individuals were named in the announcement.

The announcement follows the arrest of prominent Haitian businessman, doctor, and former presidential hopeful Pierre Reginald Boulos in Miami. Boulos, a US-born citizen who renounced his citizenship to run for president in Haiti, was reportedly taken to the Krome North Service Processing Center in Florida, a detention facility criticized by Human Rights Watch for violating international human rights standards. The reasons for Boulos' arrest remain unclear.

Haiti has experienced a surge in gang violence since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, resulting in nearly 5,000 deaths between October 2024 and June 2025, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Impact Statement: This action could significantly impact Haitian-American communities and raise concerns about due process for LPRs.
