A South Korean research group has developed a removable sticker that can quickly detect GHB, a drug often used in drink spiking. The sticker, containing an iodide indicator called BHEI embedded in silicone, changes from yellow to red upon contact with GHB, even in small concentrations (0.01 milligrams per milliliter). The researchers report near-instantaneous color changes when testing with GHB in various beverages.

While existing drink-spiking tests exist, this sticker offers a more discreet and rapid detection method. The technology is currently limited to GHB detection and requires custom molds for different shapes, but the researchers hope to expand its capabilities to detect other drugs in the future. A venture company is working to bring the product to market in South Korea. Forensic toxicologist Kabrena Rodda notes that while some spot tests can have high false positive rates, she considers this sticker test "praiseworthy and important."

Impact Statement: This technology could significantly improve personal safety in nightlife settings by providing a quick, discreet method for detecting GHB in drinks.
