Grocery prices in the UK have risen by 5.2% in the past month, the highest increase since early 2024, according to market research firm Worldpanel. This surge is pushing the average annual household food and drink spend towards an increase of £275, reaching potentially £5,558. Households are responding by switching to cheaper own-brand products and preparing simpler meals.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, compared the current food inflation to the price levels seen after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While energy and commodity costs eased in 2023, McKevitt stated, "We're back up on that rollercoaster." Chocolate, butter, spreads, and fresh meat saw the most significant price increases in the four weeks ending July 17th, while dog food, confectionery, and laundry products experienced price drops.

Worldpanel, tracking 30,000 UK households, noted that approximately one-fifth are struggling with grocery bills, with some unable to further reduce spending. The rising food costs contribute to the UK's overall inflation rate, which reached 3.6% in June 2024—the highest since January 2024.

Impact Statement: The significant increase in food prices is impacting UK households, particularly those already struggling financially, and contributing to higher overall inflation.
