Double-Decker Bus Crash in Salford Leaves 20 Injured, Driver Arrested
A double-decker bus crashed into a canal bridge in Eccles, Salford on Monday, 2023-MM-DD, injuring 20 people, three seriously. A passenger was thrown from the top deck when the bus's roof was torn off striking the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct on Barton Lane. A 19-year-old woman and two men (one in their 20s, one in their 40s) sustained serious but stable injuries. The driver, a man in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and bailed pending further inquiries. Seventeen others received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Barton Lane has reopened.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) launched an investigation, including why the 100 service bus deviated from its usual route. Police noted height restriction warnings at the bridge. Transport Commissioner Vernon Everitt stated that they are cooperating with GMP and Stagecoach. Labour MP Michael Wheeler called the crash "unacceptable," noting it wasn't the first such incident at that location. A similar incident occurred in April 2023.
Impact Statement: The incident highlights concerns about bus route adherence and bridge height restrictions, prompting investigations and calls for preventative measures.
