US Approves $4.67 Billion Missile Sale to Egypt
The US State Department approved a potential $4.67 billion sale of a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) package to Egypt. The package includes four AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar systems, hundreds of missiles, and dozens of guidance units. The sale also encompasses engineering, technical, and logistics support services from US government employees and contractors. RTX Corporation, a US multinational aerospace and defense conglomerate, will be the prime contractor. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated the sale supports US foreign policy goals and national security objectives by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally. Congress has been notified of the potential sale. If approved, approximately 26 US government employees and 34 contractors will provide training and support in Egypt.
Egypt, a long-standing US ally, has received significant defense funding from the US since the 1979 peace treaty with Israel. However, Egypt has also recently conducted joint military drills with China.
