Fernando Ramirez, 29, of San Clemente, California, has been charged with 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon following an incident outside a Los Angeles nightclub. On Saturday, Ramirez allegedly drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians leaving a reggae hip-hop event at the Vermont Hollywood venue. The motive remains unknown. Thirty-seven people sustained injuries ranging from minor abrasions to serious fractures and lacerations; eight suffered great bodily injury.

Ramirez was apprehended after bystanders attacked him. He had been shot prior to police arrival, and the shooter remains at large. Ramirez is being held without bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday. He has a prior criminal history including battery, gang-related charges, aggravated battery, and domestic violence. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that the incident could have been a mass casualty event.

The incident has left 23 individuals hospitalized. If convicted, Ramirez faces multiple life sentences.
