China commenced construction of a mega-dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River (also known as the Brahmaputra and Jamuna) in Tibet on YYYY-MM-DD. The project, including five hydropower stations, aims to become the world's largest hydroelectric power source. Premier Li Qiang attended the ceremony. The estimated cost is 1.2 trillion yuan ($167.1 billion). The project is linked to China's carbon neutrality goals and economic development in Tibet. Electricity generated will primarily be transmitted to other regions.

India has expressed concerns to China regarding the potential impact on downstream states and stated it will monitor the situation. China maintains the project will not negatively affect downstream areas and promises communication with affected countries. The dam's location, 30km from the disputed China-India border, adds a geopolitical dimension. The project's potential to displace people and impact the unique Tibetan ecosystem also raises environmental concerns. The dam's capacity is expected to surpass the Three Gorges Dam by three times.
