UN Official Urges Immediate Gaza Ceasefire, Hostage Release
A senior UN official, Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, addressed the Security Council on the escalating conflict in Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages. He described the situation as "a nightmare of historic proportions," citing expanded Israeli military operations leading to mass displacement and the striking of UN premises, hampering aid efforts. At least 1,891 Palestinians have been killed since June 30th, with many deaths occurring while collecting aid near military distribution points. On the Israeli side, 13 soldiers have been killed, and 50 hostages are reportedly still held by Hamas and other groups. The UN also highlighted growing concerns about civilian casualties, including a July 17th strike on a Catholic church in Gaza City.
Mr. Khiari stressed the need for unimpeded humanitarian aid and for recovery and reconstruction to begin. He also noted the severe fiscal crisis faced by the Palestinian Authority, exacerbated by withheld clearance revenues, and urged international support. The situation in the occupied West Bank, including high levels of violence, was also highlighted. Mr. Khiari reiterated that only a revived political process towards the two-State solution can deliver a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, significant loss of life, and widespread displacement. The severe fiscal crisis of the Palestinian Authority further complicates the situation, requiring urgent international intervention.
