UN Staff in Gaza Fainting from Hunger Amidst Humanitarian Crisis
UN staff in the Gaza Strip are fainting from hunger and exhaustion, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation. Juliette Touma, Director of Communications with UNRWA, stated that obtaining food has become as deadly as the bombardments. The UN human rights office (OHCHR) reported over 1,054 Palestinians killed while seeking food since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operations on May 27th. The GHF, supported by the US and Israeli authorities, is criticized by the UN as a "sadistic death-trap," with snipers randomly firing on crowds.
UNRWA has 6,000 trucks of supplies waiting to enter Gaza, but access is severely restricted. The World Food Programme (WFP) reports a quarter of Gaza's population faces famine-like conditions, with almost 100,000 women and children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Basic necessities are scarce and incredibly expensive. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported attacks on its facilities, staff detentions, and the denial of visas for emergency medical teams. The Israeli military operation in Deir Al-Balah caused an explosion and fire inside WHO’s main warehouse. The UN's Commissioner-General has been denied entry to Gaza since March 2024. Local authorities report more than a dozen children and adults died from hunger in the past 24 hours. The UN is calling for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the unimpeded flow of humanitarian supplies under UN management.
Impact Statement: The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza is resulting in widespread starvation and death, with UN personnel among the victims. The situation underscores a severe failure of humanitarian access and a critical need for immediate international intervention to prevent further loss of life.
